The first of the Sherlock Holmes short stories, later collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The handwriting that begins and ends the manuscript is Doyle's; the different handwriting that appears midway through the document belongs to an unidentified secretary. "Ellery Queen" (Manfred B. Lee and Frederic Dannay) arranged for the manuscript to have its current elaborate binding.
