About this collection

From the library of Evelyn Waugh (1903–1966), the "Blood Book" (entitled "Durenstein" by its creator, the Victorian businessman and politician John Bingley Garland) is a collage assembled from several hundred engravings, to which droplets of "blood" (diluted red paint) and other ornaments have been added. The principal images are natural (birds, animals, and especially snakes), Christian, and Egyptian. Together, they suggest that the artist was a Freemason or a member of the Knights Templar.
